Speaking to Japanese reporters at the U.S. Defense Department in Washington Tuesday, the official explained that the original estimate of $8 billion had increased to $10 billion after considering the necessity of building and maintaining roads, canals, and electricity supplies, Kyodo News reported Wednesday.

The official said Japan had been asked to shoulder 75 percent of the cost of moving the base, since the move was at Tokyo's request and Japan's defense budget was small compared to other nations.
